Supercharger on Fox Media Wanted -
12-03-03, 03:57 PM
I am purchasing a street supercharger kit in the very near future for my 91GT ragtop. (wife's christmas gift. ) I'd like to see picures, videos, and/or sound files of your setups. Like to see the car idling, roaring at idle, drive by. Whatever you can offer. My car is a daily driver. In addition I live in NYC. I am not sure if I want to advertise my blower(meaning too loud.) I have read some are quieter than others. But if the quietest are distinctly noticeable I guess it don't matter. Any opinions you have on decibel levels are welcome. If any don't wish to post on the forum you can email me at dji5150@nyc.rr.com
Kits Im looking at (but not limited):
Vortech - S, SQ ,T ,YS-Trim Kits
Paxton - Novi 2000
ATI - P1, D1 (not self contained)
Thanks
Note - Also posted thread at the Corral

yeah, i live in PA, and i have a vortech sc, v-1. I like noise and it definitly produces it. the v-2 is very quiet from what i've herd. but it wont take anything under 32 degrees, you'll basicly burn it out after a few days. the v-1 can tke it, but you sacrafice noise for durability. there are a few other internal belt drive units, i think powerdyne. so you might want to take a look at thoes for more quiet operation.

I have a powerdyne BD-11A as part of the ford motorsport 9psi kit and its totally 100% silent. The only time you can hear it is when the hood is open. Kicks ass at the track, pull up to an unsuspecting car at the line and hahaha sucks to be them when its all said and done. I had it on my LSC all summer and it was quite fun, but after blowing a number of AOD's and an engine, the fun came to an end, and now that car is my daily driver, so the powerdyne will be going on my notch come spring time. Very easy to install, easy to tighten the belt, and great performance boost. Brought the car from 16.31 in the 1/4 down to 14.92 with just the supercharger. It could also do one hell of a smoke show. Should be awesome on my notch!

There are only but three true sports in this world; Bull-Fighting, Mountain Climbing, and AUTO RACING. The rest are merely games in which men play.

Bit - Your friend's mufflers, are those the Bullet style Ultra Flow Welded Round or Bullet Race muffler? Those definitely badass!

RyanSG - V2 SQ Strim is prone to failure below 32F? You would think vortech would mention that, shezz. I am not neccesarily looking for a quiet blower. Just looking for one to fit my environment. I haven't heard the V2 SQ S-Trim yet. In additon I have been told V7 YS-Trim & Novi units are pretty quiet too. I have not come across YS yet. The Novi units are queiter than some of the others, based on files I have viewed.
VG30DE - Nice smoke show. I bet your looking forward to seeing better results on your light weight notch?
avbcon12 - mail box size 10mb. Its never near full. Look forward to viewing the mpeg

They are the 3 inch inlet/outlet dynomax bullets 12 inches long. I got them from summit racing. I bought some three inch tubing, and a u-bend to make the flowtubes and turndowns. Has a local muffler shop bend the flow tubes and weld it up. I would probably go with the MAC 3in produmps if I had it to do over again, would have been cheaper. The Dynomax muffers were cheap but by the time you make the flow tubes and adapters it gets expensive. I learned the hard way, lol. About the SQ's having problems below 30 degrees doesn't make sense. The engine and oil temp should be steady at around 200 degrees shortly after it is cranked and warms up. If they are having problems with the bearing oiling they mush be using too heavy weight of oil. Should have no problems with 5-30 oil unless you live somewhere it stays around zero degrees all the time, lol. In that kind of weather you shouldn't drive a Mustang anyway, need a 4x4, lol.

The SQs having problems in cold weather has nothing to do with the oil temp. The helical cut gears in the SQs are made to very close tolerances, this is what makes them quiet. When they are subjected to sub freezing temps the metal contracts, this is where the problems stem from. The only real fix would be having a heater on the head unit similar to a block heater.

seems like if the metal contracted there would be less problems that if the metal expanded due to high temps. If the metal in the gears contracts it would give greater tolerances where the gears mesh instead of less. as for the impeller to housing clearance, it should be the same as the V1 with only the gears being different.

Well from my understanding the contact path moves farther out of the helical gear putting a greater moment force on the tooth. The same happens with the V1 but stronger straight cut tooth can take the loud. The helical cut gears must stay within a small tolerance and they are at the lower end of the tolerance initially so they will still be in tolerance when operating temperature is reached.

Seems like you would have the same issues with your tranny since it has helical cut gears. Guess they are have more beef to them. I did see where you can get a custom t-5 with straight cut gears. Noisy but can take much more torque. Haha, wish I could afford one, my second T-5 is getting tired and in need of replacing. I would love to have an automatic but for a decent one is a bloody fortune. Would be nice though for boost that is. Could keep the gas to the floor and have quick shifts for maintaining boost.

guess you V2 guys need to pick you a heat tape up at the hardware store to heat the gearbox up on cold days, lol

yeah look around on different posts, vortech dosn't mention that until it's to late. No clue why they really dont give to much info on their stuff. Bt i;v eherd from a few ppl that they fail at low temps. i got the v-1. tough as a mo-fo loven it (loud 2 as bit showed us ). gunna do a puley upgrade to an 8 rib setup the spring and i'm all set.
Hey procharger, how much boost you runnen?
