Pro 5.0 Shifter Ques. - 12-04-03, 10:43 AM

I recently bought my 1997 Cobra, and the guy I bought it from has the Pro 5.0 Short throw installed. Well I don't really like the shifter handle on it because its freezing cold on cold days, and it makes my hand semi-slip and sometimes almost miss putting it into a gear. I have tried to take it off numerous amounts of times, and it seems like its either put on by some tuff guy, or some tuff thread lock, my last guess which I'm thinking it is.. They didn't come with a handle already attached to them do they? If not, have any good advice on taking the old one off.. Its Polished Aluminum thats why I cannot get a good grip.

No they don't come with the shifter knob attached. My only suggestion is to take the actual handle off of the shifter base, put it in a vise, and take the knob off with a pipe wrench. Be careful not to bend your handle. Of course, the pipe wrench is going to mangle the knob...but I'm assuming you want it dead anyway.

Is the knob held in with a set screw?

Hmm. When I got my Steeda Tri-Ax, there was something in the instructions about Al knobs on the handle. I think it said something like "never put on an aluminum knob without using some type of metal grease.... or something...." Maybe that's what happened-- whoever put it on didn't use that stuff and it's just really stuck on. Maybe a squirt of WD-40 would help?? See, and it sucks that Al handles get cold in winter and hot in summer and that's why I won't bother with Al knobs. Hope you get that thing off without breaking anything.

Take care.

They were most likely talking about Anti-Seize..

I hate to suggest it but maybe adding a little heat would help if it is seized up.

I don't think theres a set-screw, at least to what I see when I look at it. I pulled the boot down a little bit to check 360degrees around. It sounds to me like its Antigen351W said its prolly stuck on there good between the 2 metals, but I never heard about that before.

I have tried so many things already, like jar openers, that thing "as seen on tv", I would like to stay away from heat, I dont wanna torch in my car. Im kinda accident prone..lol :P

I thought Steeda only warned you about putting an aluminum knob on an aluminum handle.......but anyways, sounds like you have a plan. Try that jar opener thing with the rubber strap, I've heard they work very well.

yea use a pipe wrench, just put a cloth or something like that in between the grips and the shifter itself, that way you don't tear the hell out of the knob...if that slips you can use one of those cap opener things....(little rubber thing that grips stuff)... If that don't get it, i don't know what to tell you.....

Get a rag put it over it and then tighten a hose clamp on it. Then use a pair of vise grips on the hose clamp and twist it of. It works every time and it doesnt do any kind of harm to the knob.
