Which of these two cams for my setup?? - 01-06-04, 12:26 PM

The setup:

331 stroker
TW heads that flow 290/212
1.6 RR
Vic Jr intake
650 speed demon carb
3/8" fuel line with a high flow mechanical pump
3.50 gears in a 9"
3300-3500 TCI stall in a built C4
Car weighs about 2700 lbs
Engine should be able to spin to 6500+ no problem (lightweight internals w/ girdle and ARP bolts/Studs)

Two cam choices:

Xe274HR
Specifications:
* Advertised duration: 274 intake/282 exhaust
* Duration at .050 in.: 224 intake/232 exhaust
* Gross valve lift: .555 in. intake/.565 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 112 degrees
* RPM range: 2,200-6,200
* Needs 2,500 stall, 3.55-3.73 gears, better heads, intake, and fuel system

-OR-

Xe282HR
Specifications:
* Advertised duration: 282 intake/290 exhaust
* Duration at .050 in.: 232 intake/240 exhaust
* Gross valve lift: .565 in. intake/.574 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 112 degrees
* RPM range: 2,600-6,500
* Street/strip, needs EEC IV upgrade, heads, intake and gears

Car is NOT a daily driver. It will see a little bit of cruising time and thats about it. MIGHT be raced a few times once the engine is broken in just to see what times it pulls, but thats it.

Let me know what you all think.

I think I'd shoot an e-mail or call Comp Cams cam help techs and let the experts pick the right cam for your combo. That's what I did. The better information you give them the closer your selection will be.

Get yourself something with around 248@.50
At what lift is the peak flow of your heads?
How much comp are you running?

well I see you have relatively small gears and a medium sized convertor and a smaller 650 carb, from those two I say the smaller XE cam would be the better choice, then again you have victor jr intake with 331 cid mtor which the bigger cam would be a better choice, either way both cams would make great power and be close to each other in the power curve.

the biggest issue is the tfs heads. if they are stock than most likely they have single springs with a damper good for around .550" of lift depending on the installed height. so both of those cams are out of the question if they are stock tfs heads. if the springs are upgraded than I go with the bigger cam. if the springs are tfs stock than I'd call comp cams and get a custom XE cam, picking lobes with 224/232 deg of duration or close to that but with only .550" of lift or under, 110 deg lobe seperation, +4 deg adv built in. another concern you need to address is piston to valve clearance...... you'll need .080"I/.100" E minimum.
