90 gt bd-11a and bbk rails, idle rich with mass air!! - 03-10-07, 07:44 PM

hi, I just bought a 90 gt with a new engine from motorsport and a Powerdyne bd-11a charger. Had to trailer it home because the person I bought it from never really finished the install. When you plug the mass air in the car starts to smoke and idle real rough. If I leave it unplugged the car will surge up to 3000 rpm and fall back to 1100 until it warms up with no smoke. Any ideas?? Also I get a loud buzzing from the fuel pump and the the car stumbles and dies. I let it sit for about a minute and it fires back up and I can drive it again until the pump starts buzzing again and it dies again. Is this the fuel pump failing or do my problems lie elsewhere.Everything under the hood is new, Bd-11a, bbk upper and lower, bbk rails, bbk headers, complete msd ignition. guy had over $10,000 into this motor and had to get rid of the car. Any help getting this baby straightened out would be great.

Thanks, Jesse

Requesting a Mod move this to General Tech; which should get more responses...

Jesse,
Start out by pulling the diagnostic codes.
When you have some, post them up...
You will find some good diagnostic info here.

It will be tough figuring out what projects were finished and which weren't. But it sounds like it will be worth it

Ok. I just got a good look at the engine comp. and there is no spot for the 02's on the headers and no o2's present, that is most likely the reason for the mass air not being plugged in. Is there a way around that?? Also can I just replace the pump in the tank with a stock fuel pump or do I need to upgrade do to the charger needing more fuel??? Sorry if these questions sound stupid. This is really my first time working with a car that is supercharged.

Thanks, Jesse

I may be wrong... but with no MAF or O2's your computer reads lean when you plug the MAF in... so it accomidates resulting in dumping of fuel @ idle (smoke). Also, if your fuel pump is humming, I'd definately replace it especially if the car dies. For the couple hunderd bucks its not worth melting a motor. I'd go with 250gph for a boosted app.

Jesse,
The in tank pump can be replaced with a 255lph replacement/upgrade. Most supercharger setups can get away with this pump, but I am not sure what power level you should stay under with this pump. I would guess around 450-500hp.
If the pump is making 'unusually loud' noises, and the motor acts out when these noises start, then the pump should probably get swapped.
However, there could be a short in the wiring or something like that

The factory O2 location is actually in the mid pipe. You will have to get under the car to see them and their mounting locations.
Most long tube headers seem to have the O2 bungs in the header though...

Not having the MAF plugged in has nothing to do with the O2's being unplugged.
You should be able to plug the MAF back in, and should plug the MAF back in.
If the car runs worse with the MAF plugged in, then the cause needs to be found. (this may or may not be the MAF though)

Please check and verify the following...
What size are the injectors?
What MAF meter are you using?
Is the MAF cal'd for the injectors?
What ecu are you using?

KOEO diagnostic codes would help as well...
