460 in my vert -
09-11-07, 08:47 PM
Well I'm at that point again. Been thinking on putting the 460 in the vert. First off will I have any clearance problems with the BB? My car is low with the 351 in it. I have a c4 now will this work with the 460? Thanks guys.

You shouldn't have any clearance issues dropping the 460 in the Fox. I don't know if the C4 will mate though, I know a C6 will. The one issue you have to check is the tranny crossmember. If you look on the drivers side and it is a double hump it will fit. If the part closest to the drivers side is flat then it won't, you'll need a different tranny crossmember. it won't be any different dropping a 460 in a fox than a 4.6. Those damn mod motors are huge.

I have a double hump crossmember. I have had this thing for a year or so and never had the drive to see it through. If I go with a c6 can I use my same drive shaft?

I scored a whole set up when i got mine. I got the 460, a C6 tranny still mated to the motor, a set of Hooker Super Comp headers to fit a 460 into a Fox and a Driveshaft to mate a C6 to a Fox rearend plus the motor plates for the 460 to drop right into the Fox. I don't know what the driveshaft came out of though. I'll ask the guy I bought it from and see what it's out of. I'm sure you can't use you C4 drive shaft though. I'll measure the length of it for you so you can at least have an idea.

I would like to use my c4 if I can. I have a lot of money in it.

Um, no? A BONE STOCK 65-66 C4 is good to ~400hp. The 1970+ C4s are much stronger, and with upgrades, it should have no problem holding a 460. Finding a 460/C4 bell is gonna be a problem though.

It's a PA c4. It's rated at more power than I'll ever make. But if it's going to be a problem I'll see if I can find a c6.

The C4 will NOT bolt up to a 460 Ford. The C6 will as stated. The 4.6L SOHC and DOHC engines are 4 inches wider than a 460 Ford motor. It will fit..... www.50resto.com makes 460 big block motor mounts for use in a stock K-frame.
Did you ask about springs? What springs are you using now? You could try to use springs from a 99+ V8 Mustang. They are the thickest springs of all the Mustangs. I would highly recommend the 03-04 Cobra springs. They are the beefiest of them all! (Iron block motor, supercharger, 6spd etc...)

Yes it will, the C4s have a detachable bell housing and were used in 351M (BBF bolt pattern) applications. Finding a 351M/C4 bell or aftermarket BBF/C4 bell may be a pain in the ass, but it will work.

I can't believe this is an issue,if you have a PA C4 that is the best thing to use. What your gunna need is the right converter and flexplate,Im not sure if the pilot shaft is the same between a BBFand SBF converter.
Dont go looking for a stock bellhousing, thats just stupid, for one you break one and you trash your trans (tears up the pump and drive).
JW 92461 is the bellhousing you want

What about staying manual!!!! -
09-20-07, 07:47 PM
what about staying manual, I would like to keep my ride a five speed, would any of the tremecs work 500, or 600, or the astro t-5. if so, would the bell housing have to be changed, anyone know who would make a bellhousing for this kinda set up.

I think the Lakewood bellhousing will fit. The only other thing is obtaining the correct flywheel and pilot bearing.

As far as space in the engine compartment, check out the photos of my 87 Maroon Turbo Coupe 460 install and the 460 in our 83 Gray T-Bird.
The TC 460 sits one inch lower in the car than the Gray Bird.
Of course the TC has one-off special solid mounts and 1/2 k-frame spacers.
Clears the TC hood by 1/8th inch !

As far as clearance issues, no issues at all, but you must have a 5.0 double hump tranny x-member. Look in my other threads to see pics of my car, thats with all stock 5.0 suspension and it sits fine.

Running a stock bellhousing is fine. Go to 460ford.com. Lots of info of there. It would be best to put a tube k-member in because it opens a lot of room up. I have a 466 in a 87gt and I used to have stock fox v-8 springs and the car set right in the front and did not set to low. You will have to beef up that 8.8 is you plan on putting and power to hte ground because the 460s make lots of torque.

I am taking the heads to the shop to have them worked. I am changing the cam once I decide on one. Is it a good idea to have the piston rings changed? This thing has sat for more than a year. It has over 100k on it.
